No licence required if hunting deer on private land

In 2019, the requirement to hold a General Licence (G-Licence) to hunt deer on private land in NSW was removed. However, private land hunters are encouraged to hold a NSW Game Hunting Licence for the many benefits, including $25 million third party public liability insurance when hunting with permission on private land Australia wide.

The General Licence (G-Licence) allows you to hunt game birds on private property in NSW, including native species under the Native Game Bird Management Program.

You must have the landowner or manager's permission to hunt on their land in addition to a G-Licence.

The G-Licence does not allow you to hunt on declared public hunting land. To hunt on public land in NSW you need a Restricted Licence (R-Licence).

You don't need a licence if you are hunting rabbits, foxes, feral deer, feral goats, feral pigs, hares, feral cats or wild dogs (other than dingo) on private land, you just need the permission of the landowner.

Qualifying

G-Licence applicants must:

• be over 12 years
• have parent or guardian approval if over the age of 12 and under 18 years
• have achieved a minimum grade of NSW-T in the Waterfowl Identification Test (WIT) to seek endorsement for native game bird hunting.

Applying

Use the buttons above to apply for a new licence or renew an existing licence. Existing licence holders should log in to the Hunt NSW portal with their username and password, then select 'My profile' and 'Renew' from the licence list.

You must attach evidence to your application, which may include:

• proof of identity
• evidence you've completed the WIT.

Applications not containing all the required information will be returned to the applicant.

Cost

The concession rate is only available to minors (under 18 years) and certain pensioners. Supporting evidence must be supplied with your application. Read the Granting a licence page for more information on qualifying for the concession rate.

Insurance

$25 million public liability insurance is attached to every standard G-Licence.
