New horticulture guides equip NSW growers with latest industry insights

NSW horticulture professionals now have access to the latest research and crop protection strategies with the release of two updated guides from the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (NSW DPIRD).
The latest editions of the Orchard plant protection guide and the Grapevine management guide are now available online, offering essential resources for temperate fruit and winegrape growers throughout the state.
Temperate Fruit Development Officer and co-author Jessica Fearnley-Pattison said the Orchard plant protection guide is a vital tool for NSW deciduous fruit growers.
“This guide delivers the most current integrated pest and disease management (IPDM) practices, along with updated chemical registrations and feature articles about the latest research,” Ms Fearnley-Pattison said.
This year’s edition includes four new feature articles showcasing NSW DPIRD research projects, such as:
- the emerging cherry leaders group
- optimising protected cherry production
- bushfire recovery project
- postharvest insights from Dr John Golding.
In addition to the release of the latest edition of the Orchard plant protection guide, the Grapevine management guide 2025-26 continues its legacy as a flagship publication for the viticulture sector.
NSW DPIRD Viticulture Development Officer Penny Flannery said the guide supports wine industry professionals with practical, trial-based information.
“This Grapevine management guide provides information for viticulturists on different aspects of vineyard management,” Ms Flannery said.
“The annual guide has been in existence for more than 30 years, and this latest edition includes some critical topics and important developments for winegrowers.”
This year’s edition features:
- articles on the NSW Rootling Network workshops
- case studies on grazing sheep in vineyards, under-vine cover crops, vine removal, reworking and top grafting
- expanded biosecurity coverage
- pest and disease management, specifically for mealybugs, scale insects and crown gall.
Hard copies of the guides will be available from local agricultural retailers and regional associations from late September 2025.
