Back to Belgenny celebrates rich agricultural heritage Saturday 9 August

The NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (NSW DPIRD) is hosting the annual ‘Back to Belgenny’, event, the largest community event of the year for Belgenny Farm, with more more than 2,000 eager visitors expected to be in attendance.
NSW DPIRD is inviting attendees to gather at the historic site to celebrate the unique agricultural and political legacy of Belgenny Farm, once the home farm of pioneering pastoralists John and Elizabeth Macarthur.
The Macathur family were known for being one of the first to export wool in commercial quantities, created the first commercial vineyard in NSW, and were pioneers in the dairy industry, building the first rotolactor in NSW.
NSW DPIRD Director of Education, Darren Bayley said the event offers a rare opportunity to experience living history in one of Australia’s most significant agricultural locations.
“Belgenny Farm is a cornerstone of our farming heritage, and Back to Belgenny brings that history to life in a way that’s engaging, educational and fun for all ages,” Mr Bayley said.
“Events like this are vital for connecting people with the land, especially younger generations who may not have grown up on farms.
“Belgenny Farm holds a special place in our state’s history as it’s where modern Australian agriculture began to take shape and it’s fitting that we honour that legacy with this community event.”
The day will see a range of activities including; demonstrations from the 73rd Regiment of the Red Coat soliders, sheep shearing and sheep dog trials, and traditional crafts such as blacksmithing and new this year, visitors can enjoy free tractor rides to the historic cemetery where 11 family members including John and Elizabeth Macarthur are buried.
The day also features market stalls and food vans including a Drovers Camp hosted by the ‘Friends of Belgenny’, Devonshire Teas served by the iconic Country Women’s Association (CWA) , and a pre-booked lunch in the Granary, provided by the newly appointed caterers, Forte Catering and Events.
Mr Bayley said visitors will be immersed in the stories and skills that shaped Australia’s agricultural foundations, with hands-on activities and demonstrations throughout the day.
“This event is a celebration of community, history and the enduring spirit of rural NSW,” Mr Bayley said.
“We encourage everyone to come along and be part of this special day.”
Back to Belgenny is a ticketed event held at Belgenny Farm, located at 100 Elizabeth MacArthur Ave, Camden South and is suitable for all ages. Gates open at 11:00am, with activities concluding at 3:00pm.
