LiDAR collection in estuarine systems


In response to the significant 2022 flood event, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data was collected across three estuaries, the Manning, the Macleay and Bellinger-Kalang to better understand the impacts on these dynamic systems.An aerial image showing land levels using LiDAR data.

Specialised aircraft were flown over each estuary, capturing high-resolution elevation data from the tidal limit through to the mouth of the estuary. Extensive areas of adjacent floodplain were also included.

The LiDAR data has been used to quantify the volumes and rates of sediment lost from the estuarine systems, enabling the identification of key erosion hotspots contributing to fine sediment loads.

Deposition of fine sediments has adverse impacts in the estuary through declining water quality and smothering of valuable aquatic habitats. The analysis allows land managers to guide management actions and prioritise stabilising vulnerable sites to protect the ecological health of waterways.

Full LiDAR data sets for these 3 systems are now publicly available through the ELVIS (Elevation Information System) portal.

ELVIS is a national online platform managed by Geoscience Australia, providing open access to elevation and depth data, including LiDAR, for a range of scientific, planning, and environmental applications.
