Exhibited animals

The Exhibited Animals Protection Act 1986 (the Act) governs exhibitors so that they provide the required standards of care, presentation and safety. The NSW Departmemt of Primary Industries and Regional Development (the department) is the enforcement agency for the Act. Our inspectors regularly visit the NSW animal exhibitors to make sure they are doing the right thing.

Under the Act, the department must issue an authority (permit, licence or approval) before animals can be exhibited. The licensing scheme includes requirements authority holders must meet regarding the housing, care and exhibition of their animals.

We receive advice from the Exhibited Animals Advisory Committee, which comprises representatives from industry, animal welfare groups and government.

Reporting exhibited animal welfare concerns

To make a complaint under the Act about the treatment or condition of an animal in:

a zoo, fauna park, or oceanarium
a circus
a mobile reptile display
a mobile animal nursery or
some other type of animal exhibit
