Hook and line bins

Recreational fishing related litter and debris has been identified as an important environmental threat, particularly for interactions with marine animals and habitat impacts. It can have wide-ranging negative impacts on the environment and social values such as tourism, community enjoyment and wellbeing. Birds, turtles, platypus and other aquatic animals can be accidentally injured by discarded fishing tackle, including fishing line, hooks and sinkers, lures, and nets. Community members and their dogs that visit popular fishing sites can also be impacted by fishing debris.

Hook and line bins provide a disposal solution for waste fishing line and tackle in recreational fishing hotspots. When used correctly, the bins will help reduce the environmental impacts caused by fishing related litter in the local ecosystem.

NSW DPIRD has been collaborating with local councils and organisations to supply and install strategically located hook and line bins since 2021. These locations are usually around public facilities, fishing hotspots and boat ramps. The bins are waterproof, durable, made out of 100% recycled material and also act as a visual reminder to correctly dispose of gear. There are currently more than 25 councils involved in the program, and we are looking to work with more councils across the state. When used correctly the bins will help reduce the environmental impacts caused by fishing related litter in the local ecosystem.

These bins are typically installed adjacent to easily accessible fishing hotspots where there are no other bin options available. Before they are provided, it’s important to acknowledge the ongoing need for their regular maintenance, including monitoring and emptying the bins as necessary.

These bins are part of a marine debris awareness package available to NSW councils which also includes large waterproof stickers designed for installing on standard 240l council bins. These stickers are designed to act as a visual reminder for people to do the right thing and dispose of any waste or unwanted gear responsibly as well as provide responsible fishing information.
