Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE)
TSEs are a rare group of fatal brain diseases caused by abnormal proteins called prions, which affect both animals and humans. These diseases damage the brain and nervous system, leading to progressive neurological symptoms and death.
Examples include bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, or “mad cow disease”) in cattle, scrapie in sheep and goats, and Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD) in humans.
