Equine Encephalomyelitis (Eastern, Western and Venezuelan)
Eastern, Western and Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (EEE, WEE and VEE) are serious viral diseases caused by mosquito-borne zoonotic arboviruses. These viruses are endemic in North, Central and South America but do not occur in Australia.
All three viruses belong to the same family and can produce similar clinical signs in horses. In severe cases, these may include:
Neurological signs:
- Hyperexcitability
- Blindness
- Ataxia (loss of coordination)
- Severe mental depression
- Recumbency (unable to stand)
- Convulsions
- Fever (pyrexia)
- Loss of appetite (anorexia)
- Severe depression
