Chickpea Variety Factsheets and Seed Partners

Chickpea Breeding Australia, delivered in partnership between the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), was a coordinated national chickpea breeding effort over the past five years.

At the time of its transition in 2026, the Chickpea Breeding Australia program represented 52 years of NSW Government investment, beginning in 1974, and marked the conclusion of 36 years of joint investment with the GRDC under that innovation model.

As the program enters its next phase, responsibility for future breeding activities will transition to industry‑led delivery, building on the strong foundation established through the various long‑standing state and federal partnerships. The NSW Government remains committed to supporting research capability and innovation that strengthens regional industries and delivers lasting benefits to farming communities.

The GRDC strategic goal is to invest in chickpea breeding that delivers commercially competitive, high‑performing varieties that generate long‑term returns for growers, while enabling a sustainable, industry‑led breeding and commercialisation system for the Australian grains sector.
